Het Markttheater is a theatre collective that brings new life to the tradition of market theatre, performing with the spirit of the street and engaging directly with the world around it. Led by artistic directors Sean Hauser and Justin van der Veen, together with business manager Sofie de Vroom, the company works with a broad ensemble of makers, actors, musicians, and other artists.
As a form of contemporary popular theatre, Het Markttheater gives voice and visibility to marginalized groups while critically examining dominant social structures and ideas. Through journalistic research, improvisation, and artistic exploration of popular theatre traditions, the group creates montage performances full of comedy, interaction, music, and new stories that appeal to a broad and diverse audience.
The marketplace is their stage — a meeting point for all layers of society and the perfect place to develop accessible, socially engaged theatre. Their performances take place in the middle of public markets, featuring striking sets and open audience spaces, and are always free to attend. In doing so, Het Markttheater reaches people who might otherwise never go to the theatre, creating both artistic and social impact.
Since 2021, the Dappermarkt in Amsterdam has been their home base, where they rehearse, create, and even manage an anti-squat studio space. They also regularly perform at the Sunday Market and Binnenrotte Market, continuing to bring theatre to the heart of everyday life.
