Arlene Goldbard is an American writer, social activist, painter, and consultant whose work explores the intersections of culture, politics, and spirituality. She is a leading advocate for cultural democracy, emphasizing the essential role of art and creativity in shaping a just and compassionate society.
Throughout her career, Goldbard has worked with community-based organizations, public agencies, and cultural institutions to develop policies and practices that center people’s voices and cultural expression. From 2013 to 2019, she served as Chief Policy Wonk of the U.S. Department of Arts and Culture, a citizen-led organization promoting participatory cultural policy.
Goldbard is the author of several influential books, including New Creative Community: The Art of Cultural Development and The Culture of Possibility: Art, Artists & The Future.
