Arts in Action (AiA) is a multidisciplinary arts organisation that has been working throughout Trinidad’s grassroot communities for over 25 years. It offers costume design workshops, choreography, participatory theatre, and music for steel pan orchestras. It is a not-for-profit unit of the Department of Creative and Festival Arts of the University of the West Indies in St. Augustine, Trinidad and Tobago. AiA firmly believes that the arts have an indispensable role to play in the process of social and attitudinal change and development. AiA is highly respected throughout the Caribbean for the sustained and socially engaged support it provides to communities, not only in their preparations for the annual carnival but before and beyond.
Trinidad has the oldest and largest carnival celebrations in the Caribbean, with potent roots that go back all the way to slavery. It also has strongly influenced the carnivals of other Caribbean nations, including the Dutch Antilles, and on the two largest summer carnivals in Europe: in Notting Hill (England) and Rotterdam.
