The Herds – Dutch Premiere in Rotterdam
In March 2026, life-sized animals will move through the streets of Rotterdam during the 10th anniversary edition of the International Community Arts Festival (ICAF). ICAF presents the Dutch premiere of the international art project The Herds.
The large animal figures, made from fragile ecological materials, are fleeing the effects of climate change. As they enter the city, a special encounter arises between humans and animals, between nature and the urban environment.
The Herds is not a performance to simply watch. Around 150 Rotterdam residents actively participate, forming the herd together with the international artistic team. They operate the animals and play a central role in the large public presentations in Rotterdam South and in the city centre.
Beyond these public moments, the project includes a dedicated programme for professionals and students, as well as an educational programme for primary schools. In this way, The Herds lives not only in the streets, but also in neighbourhoods, schools, and conversations that continue beyond the festival itself.
