The Art in the Market Project:

Addressing Racial Issues through Community Art

Article

The Art in the Market Project:

Racially motivated civil unrest erupted in Cincinnati, Ohio, during the spring of 2001. Art in the Market, a community-based art program located in the primarily African American neighborhood of Over-the-Rhine, used art as a collective response to the racial issues of the city. Drawing upon observations and interviews with the youth participating in the project, the authors describe an approach to community-based art that springs from notions and concerns of participatory action research. Further, implications of such an approach for other communities with similar concerns are addressed.
