On the occasion of the ICAF 2023, Chaabi Habibi presents the project ‘Le Mystère des Voix Chaabi’. Musicologist Hélène Sechehaye and singer Laïla Amezian explain how women from the Moroccan diaspora make the musical chaabi tradition their own and in turn pass it on to new generations. On the programme: a conference about this popular music style from Morocco and the trajectory it has traveled to our region, followed by a short singing initiation.
This workshop will look to the question: what is popular chaabi music? How did the genre originate? What role did women play in this? And how much is the colorful poetry of these songs, which often deal with love and everyday life, but also the universe or other mystical subjects, still relevant today.
