In April, as part of the series of ICAF specials, discussions were held with Ed Carroll and Vita Gelūnienė regarding The Cabbage Field, a community opera developed by Zemuju Sanciu Bendruomene in Kaunas, Lithuania. During their attendance at ICAF, it became apparent that Ed possessed a comprehensive understanding of the internal mechanisms of the Faro Convention. Consequently, he was invited to elucidate its principles.
In the subsequent episode, Ed delved into the Convention, which is grounded in the notion that knowledge and utilization of heritage constitute a fundamental aspect of individuals’ right to engage in cultural life, as outlined in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. Article 1 emphasizes that rights pertaining to cultural heritage are intrinsic to cultural participation. Article 4 asserts that everyone possesses the right to benefit from cultural heritage and contribute to its enrichment.
Functioning as a “framework convention,” the Faro Convention serves as a guiding principle for the Faro Convention Network (FCN), offering comprehensive knowledge, expertise, and tools within a framework conducive to constructive dialogue and cooperation.
