The Herds – life-sized animals move through the city

During the 10th anniversary edition of the International Community Arts Festival (ICAF), monumental animal figures will move through the streets of Rotterdam. Operated by an international team of artists and one hundred Rotterdam residents, these sculptures are crafted from fragile, ecological materials. Fleeing the impacts of climate change, the animals create a striking, poetic encounter between humans, nature, and the urban environment.

A global phenomenon comes to the Netherlands

In 2025, The Herds travelled 20,000 kilometres from Kinshasa to the Arctic, capturing worldwide attention. Conceived and directed by Amir Nizar Zuabi, and created by The Walk Productions (known for Little Amal) and Ukwanda Puppet Company, the project became an international sensation.

Now, for the first time, this extraordinary herd can be experienced in the Netherlands — making the Rotterdam edition truly special.

Dance as an added dimension

In every city, The Herds evolves through collaboration with local artists. In Rotterdam, Zuabi works with choreographer Jordy Dik (DIK Danstheater) to develop a dance intervention performed by Compagnie Tiuri and students from Codarts. Tiuri’s ensemble — featuring performers with and without disabilities — brings a rich, authentic movement vocabulary that deepens the emotional power of the herd. This dance will only be performed on Saturday in Rotterdam centre.
