CLOSING EVENT on 31st<\/sup> of October<\/strong>\u00a0<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

ICAF NWE MKRS, our annual festival which connects, inspires, celebrates and gives stage to young community arts talent from the Netherlands will once again be taking place. Yet, this year, with a slight twist. At ICAF, we consider community arts to be an art discipline on its own. Within this discipline \u2018the artist\u2019 has a very different role than in other art disciplines, like for example theatre or dance, but also the role and definition of \u2018community\u2019 and of \u2018art\u2019 need to be reconsidered. Therefore, we have decided to make some changes to the NWE MKRS format, adding some new, and very important layers to the programme.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

NWE MKRS PART 1<\/strong> 
In order to understand community arts as an own art discipline, we have decided to add new layers to the NWE MKRS program. We have divided the NWE MKRS festival into two parts. The first part takes place annually at the beginning of an academic year (autumn) and the second part at the end of an academic year (spring). <\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the lead up to the NWE MKRS part 1 ICAF will be going on tour to art schools across the Netherlands to provide students a with an introduction to community arts. We\u2019ll be talking about the role of the artist, the definition of \u2018community\u2019, and new understandings of \u2018art\u2019. We will bring in inspiring national and international community arts examples whilst zooming into the potentials and the pitfalls of this work.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sign up for the CLOSING EVENT on 31<\/strong>st<\/sup><\/strong> of October<\/strong> 
The tour will culminate in an NWE MKRS PART 1 closing event on October 31, 2023. This event is specifically meant for Dutch community arts makers and will be partly in Dutch. <\/strong>The evening will start <\/strong>with a keynote talk from Theron Schmidt about community arts processes and the facilitation of a democratic space. After the talk we will enjoy the performance \u201cUsually I\u2019m on Top\u201d, directed by the young community theatre maker and our former \u2018new maker\u2019, Sanne Arbouw.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sinds de oprichting in 1992 produceert Rotterdams Wijktheater (RWT) theater gemaakt voor en door mensen zonder ervaring. RWT bereikt dit door werk te cre\u00ebren dat nauw aansluit bij de ervaringen van het publiek dat ze willen bereiken. RWT organiseert ook om de drie jaar het International Community Arts Festival (ICAF). <\/p>\n\n

RWT gebruikt de volgende bewezen en effectieve methodes voor hun werk: Producties worden gemaakt in nauwe samenwerking met de acteurs, die allemaal afkomstig zijn uit lokale Rotterdamse gemeenschappen. Lokale bewoners brengen hun ervaringen op het toneel onder begeleiding van professionele schrijvers en regisseurs. Deze persoonlijke ervaringen hebben betrekking op onderwerpen die bekend zijn bij het publiek: huiselijke of lokale spanningen, de zoektocht naar een culturele identiteit, vriendschap, ouder worden, enzovoort. <\/p>\n\n

Elk jaar stappen tientallen lokale leden van de gemeenschap voor het eerst in hun leven het podium op. Voor velen is dit een levensveranderende ervaring. RWT treedt jaarlijks tussen de 70 en 80 keer op, voor een totaal publiek van zo'n 10.000 mensen. Op hun beurt produceren deze doelgroepen vaak nieuwe generaties RWT-acteurs. <\/p>\n\n

RWT maakt theater gericht op specifieke doelgroepen, eerder waren dat jongeren, vrouwen die 's avonds de deur uit kunnen en ouderen. RWT werkt soms samen met welzijnsorganisaties om educatief geori\u00ebnteerde voorstellingen te maken die zich richten op onderwerpen als huiselijk geweld, tienermoederschap, vrouwenbesnijdenis en de relatie tussen jongeren en de politie. Elke twee jaar produceert RWT een grootschalig locatiespecifiek werk. Het gaat om een periode van anderhalf jaar werken in de geselecteerde wijk met grote aantallen omwonenden.
