Welcome to this musical gathering: a community opera with 30 residents of the \u0160an\u010diai neighbourhood in Kaunas, Lithuania, performed for ICAF in the middle of the Tarwewijk neighbourhood, Rotterdam! Professional and nonprofessional artists bring the story of their neighbourhood, to which they feel an intrinsic sense of belonging, and present it in Rotterdam.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The \u201cCabbage Field\u201d Opera is the story of a former military site in \u0160an\u010diai that has been reclaimed by the local community. The site itself inspired the community to dive into the generational history and narratives of the place. What they found and interpreted in this opera are stories surrounding love, war, social solidarity, and reconciliation. Following the musical performance in the courtyard of the  Tarwewijk community centre (Cultuurwerkplaats) , the cast invites you for an informal gathering at the table for a bowl of cabbage soup, made by the group members themselves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The co-creative \u201cCabbage Field\u201d opera process began in 2018 when residents of the neighbourhood were invited by local community artists to join the creative process. The opera rehearsals took place in public sites, so that everyone could access and take part. \u201cReturning home from work I got off at my bus stop and saw a colourful community opera bus parked at the side of the street. I heard the sounds of music in it. Someone called me from within: \u2018Come in, sing with us!\u2019 I jumped onboard and I sing in the opera ever since. \u201c (Dangira Pik\u0161rien\u0117, performer)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The libretto was created during writing workshops by 11 nonprofessional writers. The music was composed by Vidmantas Bartulis, a recipient of the Lithuanian National Prize for Culture and Arts, who sadly passed away before the last part of the opera was finished. The director and choreographer of the opera is Lina Puod\u017eiukait\u0117-Lanauskien\u0117, and the initiators and producers are community artists Vita Gel\u016bnien\u0117 and Ed Carroll.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Zemuju Sanciu Bendruomene are a community association working to develop a sustainable urban vision of the nearby neighbourhood that protects the unique cultural heritage and identity of the neighbourhood against extractive capitalism<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Their goals are to:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Create self-government in the district;<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Give voice to the community;<\/p>\n\n\n\n

To take care of the environment of the district;<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Unite and unite the residents of the district;<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Foster equality and identity;<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Expand knowledge of culture, sustainable environment, health, etc. topics;<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Promote small business in the area;<\/p>\n\n\n\n

To represent the community in institutions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Community Opera<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Zemuju Sanciu bendruomene began the community opera project \"Cabbage Field\" as an art process of the Shanti community, that started in 2018. The name comes from the public space between Juozapavi\u010dius Avenue and Suomi\u0173 St., which was resurrected from the garbage dump by the community. Previously, this area was in the 19th century. barracks cellars for sauerkraut. The original arched sauerkraut warehouses have survived to this day. The libretto was created by community members. Professional and non-professional artists of the troupe are related to Shantis in various ways. All events and characters are inspired by local people and their stories. The music was composed by Vidmantas Bartulis, winner of the Lithuanian National Prize. The composer died, leaving the musical part of the opera unfinished. Though the opera involves professional musicians, all of the participating actors are directly from the community.
