And what role do community arts makers take (consciously or unconsciously) when they make participatory art that is part of a not-so-social, neoliberal political policy? For ICAF 2023, dr. Sruti Bala (University of Amsterdam) will build upon these arguments, by presenting two lectures. On Friday 31 March Sruti will present &#8220;Do No Harm&#8221; where she will dive into the practical consequences of the do-no-harm principle that derives from conflict resolution studies. It may sound like a no brainer, but what do we mean when we say \u2018do-no-harm\u2019? What kind of practical consequences does this have? How far does it go? What are the ethical questions you must ask yourself in order to \u2018do no harm\u2019? And what is the role of politics and policy in this?&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The lecture will form part of a practical session in which makers will be encouraged to go into dialogue with each other after an introduction from Sruti, to explore the ideas presented further, and apply them directly to their own contexts and practices.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>dr. Sruti Bala is Associate Professor at the Dept. of Theatre Studies, University of Amsterdam. She has previously presented at ICAF NWE MKRS 2021 and 2022 on the topic of the \u201cPitfalls of Participation in Community Arts\u201d. She is affiliated to the\u00a0\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/asca.uva.nl\/\">Amsterdam School of Cultural Analysis<\/a>\u00a0and is a member of the ASCA advisory board.<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>Sruti's research interests are at the intersections of performance and politics, which has taken shape in specific research projects on nonviolent protest, participatory art, artistic activism, feminist and postcolonial\/decolonial literary and cultural theories and translation.<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>She co-ordinates a five-year NWO-funded research project in co-operation with the University of Cura\u00e7ao on the cultural practices of citizenship in the Dutch Caribbean. \u00a0She is an active member of the collective\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.academicfreedomindia.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">International Solidarity for Academic Freedom in India (InSAF India)<\/a>.
