Community News

In Community News we share updates from community arts organizations from around the world.  This month we share a residency opportunity in St. Helens, the fundraising campaign of the Imbali Visual Literacy Project and a letter from François Matarasso to his friends in the European Union.

Residency opportunity in St. Helens (England)
Heart of Glass is a collaborative arts commissioning agency based in St Helens (northeast of Liverpool, England). Made possible by investment from Arts Council England through the Creative People and Places programme, this residency opportunity for EU based artist/s will develop through collaboration and engagement with young people (aged 11+) from each of the four neighbourhood regeneration areas of St Helens. Working with their partners Helena Homes and their youth engagement project ‘Make it Happen’ they have chosen to jointly fund a live/work residency. They are seeking expressions of interest from artists that have a demonstrable track record in working collaboratively with young people, and an ethos rooted in socially engaged practice. They anticipate the residency commencing in September 2016 for a minimum period of 6 months. Heart of Glass and Make it Happen will provide accommodation, travel costs, artist fee and a production budget. The artist would be supported by the team at Heart of Glass and Helena Homes.

Deadline: 5 July
Interviews: 19 July

Fundraising campaign of the Imbali Visual Literacy Project (Johannesburg, South Africa)
lmbali is a training provider of art, crafts and design skills and teacher education in arts and culture. Founded in 1988, Imbali has now acquired substantial experience in the craft, design and visual art education field.  As a Not Profit Organsation (NPO), Imbali’s main target groups are marginalized youth and women from townships and informal settlements surrounding Johannesburg. Imbali trains unemployed youth and women in a range of craft and design skills during a three-year full time course. Students are required to attend at Imbali five days a week from 9am till 3pm. Many struggle to cover their daily transport costs. Imbali has now compiled a list of some deserving individuals and would be grateful if you would consider sponsoring them to cover their transport. Imbali would manage the transport payments, transferring the required amount to each individual at the beginning of each month.

Letter François Matarasso
All his European friends have been in François Matarasso’s thoughts since the United Kingdom’s historic decision to withdraw from the EU. To express his friendship and solidarity he has written a letter, hoping that these events will bring out the best in us all.
